David Howell PPRSMA

I limit tuition these days to an annual appearance at Dedham Hall, in Essex, not least because I’m too busy painting.  However, as always, the emphasis is on working outside where possible and the development of painting through sketching and observation and understanding that painting is about creating something that’s good to look at rather than a perfect copy of what we see around us.  All media is acceptable and my aim is that everyone should both enjoy themselves and feel that they have made progress with their painting.

Moored at Pin Mill   W/col 33 x 53 cm

An absolute must on the Dedham course is a visit to Pin Mill.  Thames Barges, working boatyards, big skies and reflections and Adnams ale and whitebait in the Butt and Oyster.  Book early if you want to be there next year.

Summer meadows, Dedham - Oil on board -8 x 10”

An early morning oil before breakfast in the water meadows at Dedham.  This eventually had to be abandoned and finished in the studio, because a herd of bullocks decided I needed some company, with a lot of pushing and shoving and flies everywhere.  That’s plein-air painting!
