David Howell PPRSMA

Dedham is over for another year but we had a good week with varying weather but we managed to get out every day.  I limit tuition these days to my annual appearance at Dedham Hall, in Essex, not least because I’m too busy painting.  Dedham offers a compelling combination of East Anglian landscape and coastal subjects and excellent facilities with a large studio to work in and of course Wendy and Jim’s catering and back up.  As usual we worked outside with the constant theme that painting is about creating something that’s painterly, rather than a perfect copy of what we see around us.  Dates for this course next year are in the Dedham calendar (see below) but it is essential top book early if you are interested as reservations have already started.  For more details go to www.dedhamhall.co.uk or phone 01206-323027.

Xylonite on the Hard at Pin Mill   Oil 10 x 12”

An absolute must on the Dedham course is a visit to Pin Mill.  Thames Barges, working boatyards, big skies and reflections and Adnams ale and whitebait in the Butt and Oyster.  Book early if you want to be there next year.

DEDHAM HALL  22nd - 29th May 2027

Dedham Landscape W/col 24 x 30 cm

An example of how to make something from very little, creating interesting landscape greens and recession without too much detail.

Houseboat on the Deben Marshes  W/col 37 x 52 cm

This watercolour was painted in the Dedham studio from a sketch before the rain came.
